My Job Sucks.

I get paid very little. That was always my most major gripe.

But today light was shed on why my job truly sucks.

Today a kid freaked out in a class over a bad grade he received and smashed the glass panel of a door into the face of another faculty member, severely cutting them and possibly causing him to lose vision permanently in one side.

The school went into lockdown for the paramedics to arrive and take him out.  We locked the library and covered the windows to grant them privacy.

A student then kept telling me "I have to go. You have to escort me out. My cousin is waiting for me.   I have places to be." et. etc. and I tell them everyone has places to be and we have to remain in the library until the Code 10 is lifted and it's safe to leave.  She continues to argue with me saying she a doctor's appointment and that no one else has anything more important than her to go to.

Finally they lift the code 10 and two nice kids come in to play Magic the Gathering which they do every afternoon during 9th period.  One of the kids apparently knew about the glass shattering faculty member injured incident and a third guy comes in and starts asking him about it.   Knowing that we're encouraged not to permit students to talk about it until an investigation has been completed, I ask them not to discuss it and the student playing Magic agrees not to say anything.

The other guy though says "You need to let him tell me or there's going to be another code 10."  I say "Really?  Don't be like that.  You'll find out in time, now is not the appropriate time."  and he says "You think I'm kidding?  I'm dead fucking serious." whereupon I quietly turn and walk out, making the kid get removed from the library and suspended for threatening a faculty member.

Student has a history of violent threats and actions in the school. 

No child left behind is absolute and utter bullshit.  We should not be forced to deal with violent, psychotic students.

Dislike hearing that you had to go through that, and hopefully said *third/bad kid gets the help that he appears to need.  I hope that it all turns out ok.

I can only imagine how I'd deal with that situation, needless to say I am sure I wouldn't last long at any high school. Having said that, this push as a society to include everyone along on our magical happy ride to socialism children included is so ridiculous.

Unfortunately some people excel where others fail Unfortunately some people choose to live life as a slave to their environment instead of breaking the mold. Luckily our government is there to assure us that we are all the same. No need to aspire to greatness unless you are willing to share the ride.

That kid in the library, unless he changes who he is, will be left behind in spite of any legislated attempt to insure that he isn't. It disgusts me to hear stuff like this. As an educator you should rarely if ever be in harm's way. In fact it's pathetic you should worry about being harmed in any way short of catching a glancing blow breaking up a fight between students.

As a husband of a teacher (elementary school though), I can honestly feel for you. I hear a lot of things like this. Most of the time its in US schools but Canadian schools are getting bad too.

Obviously in the grades my wife teaches she wouldnt have situations as bad as yours she can give you a pretty good idea now who will end up like the kids you were talking about. Im sure it was a pretty scary situation - not really knowing if the kid is going to explode or not when you turned to walk away but I think you handled it pretty damn good.

Seriously though kids like that dont deserve to be in a school in the first place. Sure they all have a right to a education but a kid like that I would think would forfeit that right. I think you handled it properly.

Do you guys agree that school should be more like an open house sort of thing where all classes/sports/activities are open throughout the day and a student can decide what to do based on trying it out for a second, hour, day, etc. Instead of forcefully sitting down where they don't like it and don't feel valuable at all as a human being because of how they are judged by not wanting to be there in the first place? Granted your case involves an uncontrollable hormonic teenager lol. But I believe schools should be more free and less force. That way if someone is born to do only one thing (ie play a sport, science, etc) they can do it starting at 5 or when they figure out what it is they love and not JUST do that but it be a part of their life which should bring happiness to their lives I would think. All the "important" things they should learn though could be taught in 1 class that maybe is mandatory but only because of it's importance but even then now one can learn pretty much anything they want online. Thoughts?

I do agree, Minky. But an environment like that is difficult to attain with a population as massive as ours.  I firmly believe that school is strictly an institution that is designed to keep the younger generation out of trouble under the guise of providing them with an education.

If a student really wants to learn and their parents strongly encourage them to want to learn, then they'll come to school and learn...I know some kids that say they hate going home and they'd rather stay at school all day. These are the kinds of kids that I enjoy seeing, that are smart, and love to discuss anything on the news or struggle with a trig problem for as long as it takes to *get it*.

There are plenty of kids that should not be in school, period.  Forcing them to be only makes them hate school and do poorly.  Or, they're extremely smart and the classes are at a pace far too slow for them so they dick around out of boredom.  The kid that threatened me is highly intelligent but he's unstable.

I could name two others that get bored with what they're learning and could pass the class on their own in a fraction of the time it takes to go through the class in a year/semester...given the option.

You get a bad grade you blame everyone but yourself is what kids do today
and thats 100% parents fk up .....
I hated school as a kid but a bad grade ment I did not pay attention
and I didnt study end of story...

The current trend in mentality of not taking responsibility for your own actions is why the USA is so messed up these days and at the end of the day
you can blame EVERYONE you want,stomp your feet and bash your head
against the wall these will be that one person who does study and does
take an interest in school and does not cry like a baby with a bad grade and
is constantly improving themselves.....and that person will run away with success in life end of story

around here the parents now have the say whether or not to fail a kid (hold them back). Normally the parents say to not fail their kid - probably cus deep down inside they are embarrassed their kid(s) arent very smart. because to move them forward when they simply are not ready to moved ahead, is not helping the kid.

"oh lil johny will get it" - no, lil johny should be on the short bus, he shouldnt be moving to the next grade.
