Hey Guys wondering if I can get some advice here, as TFC will not start on my PC for reasons unknown. >:(
What happens is I run TFC, then nothing. Try running it again and a Steam message pops up "An error occurred while updating Team Fortress Classic (app running)."
Ctr+Alt+Del Task Manager doesn't see TFC running, yet Steam thinks it is running. No other Steam games I have seem affected.
Tried the following remediation, to no avail:
Ensured TFC is allowable to communicate through Windows firewall, both private and public check boxes crossed.
Turned Windows Firewall OFF.
Did a virus scan with malwarebytes, detected nothing and;
Deleted TFC and reloaded on to PC.
Same thing was happened to Google and GOG Galaxy, but reloading those programs fixed the issue. The only commonality with TFC those have I can see is they all interact directly with the internet on startup.
Smacks of a firewall issue, yet even when the firewall is turned off the problem still exists, also the other two affected programs worked on deletion and reload.
At a loss here, anyone got any ideas to fixing this? (Dxdiag of my PC attached)
Mines been doing the same thing . I have to go in to task mgr. find HL.exe *32 and shut it down then it loads with no problem. Still have not found anyway to correct this.
Thanks for the tip Schuffler, didn't see any HL.exe in Task Manager when I tried. One thing I did do before the troubles arose was downloaded latest windows patch, thinking maybe this could be it, but did system restore back a week and no luck. Virus perhaps?????
This started last weekend for me. I did a restore also from a month ago when everything was working fine and that didn't help. I'll keep working on it something has to fix it.
This problem is being reported across multiple 'HL Games' with very limited information, nobody really knows the root cause.. I believe there is an issue with the VAC module not loading properly on startup.
Here are some options to try, please try them in the order I listed and
PLEASE REPORT BACK WHICH OPTION WORKS FOR YOU!!!This problem is affecting many people across many games, I would like to know which method is fixing it to better track down the problem.
Troubleshooting Steps:Before attempting any of the following, please ensure that you have your custom files (configs, sprites, models, etc) backed up in a safe location. you may attempt to launch TFC after each step, however look in taskmanager for the process (hl.exe) and also check for crashdumps in the game folder (Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life)
- Verify game cache (TFC)
- Verify base game (HL)
- Launch base game before desired game (HL, and TFC)
- add command line parameter '-nofbo' (TFC)
Please try running the game after each step listed above, and report back on which options allows the game to start for you (if any).
Checked 1 and 2 all good but only way to start game is to go to task mgr. I do have crash dumps in the game folder.
Will check more after work.
Tried 1,to 3, no avail, then did -nofbo IT WORKED! :yay!: :D
Master your name says it all, absolute genius! 8)
Doesn't -nofbo send all your banking and credit card information to Master?
Shh... :shifty:
Fang where did you add number 4?
None of the fixes work for me. It'll load fine once, five times or 20 times then stop loading. I have to log off windows, log back in and it'll work once i close hl.exe in task manager the first time.

Fang where did you add number 4?
Desktop Icon
Properties
Add to end of line in URL
OK, the problem has reemerged >:(.
Restarting the PC doesn't work, and the -nofbo command is still in the icon URL.....
Any other ideas???? :rolleyes2: :'(
Master now has to give me back my bank accounts, feel free to keep the house mortgage! :D

If it's windows, can you provide the version string from the first line of 'command prompt' (search for cmd, only result)
windows 6.1.7601
So we got two times Windows 7 (SP1) so far.
I was also experiencing this, havent played much in the last few days to notice it again. Friend thats pretty tech savy had me d/l a diff task manager. Could not locate locate any hl.exe anywhere but tfc was still running, closed steam and reopend, still running. Restarting fixed it for me.
When i first looked up the issue it said it may have to do with downloading a game and it installing improperly. Which for me couldve been the case as i was downloading, deleting and cancelling games at the time the issue began.
Windows 7 home premium service pack 1.
also if I play for awhile then put the comp. to sleep I have to reboot or it won't work.

Unrelated to the primary issue, but whenever I end the hl.exe process (or it crashes) I may sometimes have a 'gameoverlayui.exe' process still running marking the game as still running according to steam.
If it happens again ill take a look for that master, thx.
My guess is that a Windows 7 security update caused the issue.
Found a bug report on Github as well.

Makes sense in my case, I manually update windows on my PC, and did so last Saturday night after which the problem emerged.
No need for a screenshot - it looks like an update to Windows 7 is causing this issue. We've reached out to Microsoft and reported it.
So for now, this is a known bug that we are aware of - please note we have no ETA for any potential update on this.
Steam Support
Charles
This is what I got back from Steam Support
ahh, thanks for the info schuffler
I got another update just now. The problem is due to Windows Game Explorer on Windows 7, so it'll have to be patched by Microsoft.
You have the option of updating to Windows 10 to circumvent the issue, or waiting for Microsoft to update Windows 7 to fix it. Please note that since Microsoft is working on this, we do not have an estimated time for a fix, or any additional information to provide.

June 25th (keep dreaming) or July 9th is the next expected windows patch.. however I don't think we can expect a patch to such a low priority issue.. especially if valve/steam is in charge of notifying microsoft about the issue. :^)
No matter in my case, on holidays for the first time in 3 years from next Wed 26 Jun. Will be out of the country 7 weeks so no TFC for me during then.... :'(.
Will put up a separate post in the next week letting the clan know I will be scarce for 2 months. ;D
I do believe this is the fix for this problem, please inform me if it does NOT work:

Hey team
Back from holiday, tried starting up TFC, and the same problem exists..... >:(
Tried Masters latest post about editing GameUX but the the service location key wasn't present, so couldn't be adjusted.
Any ideas how to get TFC going again?
The key should be there and the solution works for most. Suggest you double checking for the listed key.
Likely right here, got into Regedit GameUX, where do I go from there?
The link in Master's post tells you exactly what to do...
"Just open Regedit, got to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\GameUX\ServiceLocation and change the server address contained in the "Games" chain value to 127.0.0.1 or localhost "
I worked!!!!! :yay!:
You guys genius know no bounds! :)
Since that update crap i now have to open tfc twice. 1st time i run it the game wont open but the launcher is in the task manager. So I "end task" the launcher then run tfc again and it works no prob. This might work for others having the issue on windows7.

Occasionally happened to me on Windows 10 (v1809) as well. Updated today to v1903.
