QuoteRight now, it seems the top Steam game is Team Fortress 2 with over 50 million players. It is closely followed by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The first strictly single-player game on the list is Skyrim at 11th place with 13 million players, plus another 4 million with the Special Edition. We've listed the top twenty games here:

Team Fortress 2 – 50,191,347
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – 46,305,966
PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS – 36,604,134
Unturned – 27,381,399
Left 4 Dead 2 – 23,143,723

I must admit I was shocked to see the numbers. Makes sense now that's it's F2P but also cements the fact that a new valve team fortress game won't be coming out anytime soon. If only TF2 didn't suck balls  :grumpy:

Weird considering that the number of players active at the same time is much lower for TF2 compared to PUBG, by a factor of 11 (current) to 23 (daily max).

Guess what the white line at the bottom is ...

one problem. TF2 doesn't suck balls.
If it did, then it would be on its last breath like TFC is now.

I suppose if you have no frame of reference for team fortress games TF2 could be decent. It's too bad valve never aquired or promoted Fortress Forver as I feel that FF is the true sequel to TFC. With better marketing FF could still be thriving today

I'll take advanced movement and grenades over cartoon bullshit and hats. Playing TF2 feels like walking in quicksand

Or it's a matter of interpreting the meaning. Apparently a lot of people own TF2 and did achievements. That most of them don't play could be because TF2 is an old game, and people have moved on to newer games such as PUBG, but they still own TF2. So the total number of people who own TF2 may be large, but most of them retired.

Also it seems uncertain what exactly these numbers are based on:

QuoteThe only caveat here is that this measures... whatever stat valve is collecting with their achievement data. It's not quite "owners" and its not quite "players", It doesn't quite match up with the stat we have called "players" or "downloads" on our sales reports, it overestimates it by various amounts. I'm unsure if its collecting data for pirated copies or family sharing or whatever.

steamcharts uses data from active players, as in players who have played the game in the last few weeks or so, its not that reliable because someone could play the game for 10 minutes, quit the game and never come back and still be considered a player.

I agree, Fortress Forever is a really great game, the maps are good and the classes are balanced. TF2 is *also* a good game, it just depends on preference. I've played it for 1700 hours. TF2 does have advanced movement, too. Heres an example of a cp_process rollout.
